Frequently Asked Questions | Happy Hollow Farm

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are Happy Hollow Farm products made? Every product is handmade at our farm in Wears Valley, East Tennessee, in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Chuck and Kate build each piece to order.

What leather does Happy Hollow Farm use? We use full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather from Wickett & Craig of America — one of the last traditional tanneries in the United States, operating since 1867 moved to Pennsylvania from Canada many decades ago. We use only Grade #1 hides.

What is full-grain leather? Full-grain leather comes from the outermost layer of the hide — the strongest and most durable part. Because it hasn't been sanded or processed to remove the surface, it retains the hide's natural grain and character. You may notice slight natural variations between hides — that's proof the leather hasn't been corrected or altered.

What is vegetable-tanned leather? Vegetable tanning uses tree bark and other plant materials containing natural tannins to tan the hide. It takes significantly longer than chrome tanning — up to 14 days — but produces stronger, more durable leather that develops a rich patina with use and age.

Why does vegetable-tanned leather cost more? The process takes longer, the hides are graded more strictly, and the resulting leather outlasts chrome-tanned alternatives by decades. Most hides used today are a byproduct of the meat industry and are graded from #1 to #3. We use only #1 grade — the highest quality available.

What hardware does Happy Hollow Farm use? Solid brass hardware, Excella YKK and Riri  zippers, and Loxx snap closures made in Germany. Vinymo thread from Japan.  Vernis edge paint from France.  Every component is chosen to match the lifespan of the leather.

How long does it take to receive my order? Every product is handmade to order. Please allow 3–4 weeks from the time of your order for us to build and ship your piece.

Does Happy Hollow Farm offer a warranty? Yes. If any product is defective in materials or workmanship we will replace, repair, or credit the full purchase price. See our full warranty page for details.

How do I care for my leather goods? Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather benefits from occasional conditioning with a quality leather balm. See our leather care video for a full demonstration.
